Street Charm for Ellowyne

Street Charm is a fun casual outfit for
Ellowyne that includes cargo pants,
cropped t-shirt, and floppy newsboy hat
(not pictured on pattern cover), which
was a pleasant surprise.

When sewing this pattern, be sure to
double check which side of the pant leg
you have the pockets on BEFORE you
sew them down.  I did one leg fine, but
on the second, I had to rip them all out
and turn the leg over and start again.

Deboxer's Interview with Gary Fletcher.
DBR:  You design for a wide variety of dolls, from LeeAnn, a young girl, to adult fashion
model dolls... where do you get your inspiration?

GF:    Inspiration comes from everywhere.  Often times fabrics and textures strike me with ideas, but I've designed
based on inspirations from paintings, architectural structures, the shape of a car and even the pattern on flatware.

I like to watch what people are wearing, those people that are setting trends and usually this sort of style isn't very
conservative so it gets toned down somewhat and adapted to a doll design.  However, our coming collections for the
BJD dolls will represent some of this less conservative style.

DBR:  When you first come up with an idea, what are the steps from your initial vision of an
outfit to completed pattern?  How long does this process usually take?

GF:    An idea is usually followed by a rough sketch.  This gives me a better idea of what the designing process will
be.  There are many things to consider when designing patterns.  Sometimes what you envision isn't quite what your
customers expect and there are compromises that need to be made.  Sometimes a design proves to be not
practical.

Once a sketch has been approved the pattern making process begins and at this point the fabrics and trims are
already chosen for the sample garment.  Depending on the complexity of the design, blocks or previous patterns
serve as templates.  The first draft of a pattern is made into a garment using muslin.  From there the fit is adjusted if
needed and as many muslin mock ups as needed are created until the fit is just right.  From that final pattern the
sample garment is made using the actual fashion fabric.  The pattern cover illustration is created from the doll
wearing this sample or prototype and then the pattern is professionally drafted using computer software.  The
pattern cover is designed and the illustrated instructions written  This process can take up to two weeks.  Depending
on the complexity of the design, pattern testers are utilized and modification are made depending on their report.

DBR:  What is your favorite part of designing patterns? What part is the hardest?

GF:    Actually, this is difficult for me to answer, I love every aspect of this business.  I guess the moment something
you envision comes to life, its a very satisfying sense of accomplishment.  I'm also very interested in interacting with
our customers.  I really enjoy meeting and talking with them, getting their feedback and seeing their creations.  This
doesn't feel like work to me, I put in lots of hours and I love every minute of it.

DBR:  If someone has a problem or question on a pattern, how can they reach you for
assistance?

GF:  For orders and general questions they can call my office at (865)247-5264.  It's likely I'll answer.  We accept
credit card orders by phone now and that is a new service for those who don't have access to the internet.  For
pattern questions or technical support they can email us directly at mail@garyfletcher.us.

Dreary Daze for Ellowyne
This pattern is an Exclusively Ellowyne pattern, which
means it is made in a small limited edition number and is
not available in PDF format.
I was kind of discouraged that I wouldn't get the instant
gratification of getting it downloaded right after buying, but
was very pleased at how fast I got it in the mail, and the
HIGH quality paper and instructions!
The pattern went together pretty easily, until I got to the
lining part which I didn't understand... (but I'm a beginning
seamstress), but I had emailed MHD earlier on how to line
her Fin de Semaine pattern, and used her tips to make this
a fully lined amazing jacket for Ellowyne!
These exclusive patterns will be changed each month and
are a lot of fun to play around with!
